Baselane vs Stessa: compare bookkeeping before choosing a paid plan

Both deserve a workflow evaluation when property finances are your main concern. Compare the records you need, then assess the cost of automation.

Baselane is a financial technology company and is not an FDIC-insured bank. Banking services provided by Thread Bank, Member FDIC.

Recommendation: begin with a month-end reporting exercise. Choose the product that preserves a clear, exportable record with the least rework for your portfolio. Do not choose by headline banking yield or affiliate commission.

Subscription starting points

Baselane Core and Stessa Essentials start at $0. Baselane Smart is listed at $20/month on an annual plan. Stessa Manage and Pro annual-plan equivalents are $12 and $28/month. Compare billing commitments and transaction fees separately; see the dedicated pricing pages for details and known discrepancies.

Annual-plan subscription arithmeticAnnual total
Stessa Manage$144
Baselane Smart$240
Stessa Pro$336

The $96 gap on either side of Smart is only a subscription comparison. It says nothing about the value of the workflow or your total fees. Do not treat these differently named tiers as equivalent packages.

Use an identical month-end exercise

  1. Select a representative property and list its starting balances.
  2. Include rent, a deposit, a repair, a reimbursement and a correction.
  3. Check how each item is categorized and assigned to the right property or entity.
  4. Produce the report your accountant actually needs.
  5. Export the records and verify that you can trace totals back to source transactions.

Keep sensitive account data out of an initial vendor demonstration; a synthetic example can reveal workflow gaps. Once you are ready to use real data, follow the provider’s normal account and consent process.

Banking and software are separate decisions

A useful bookkeeping tool does not by itself establish that a connected financial account is suitable for you. Review eligibility, bank terms, payment timing and the current fee schedule. If you intend to keep your existing bank, verify that the desired workflow works with that arrangement before comparing upgrade prices.

When to stay on a free plan

Stay on the free route when it produces the necessary records and paid features do not remove a recurring task. Upgrade only after naming the task, checking that the feature handles it, and testing the output. Do not calculate savings from hours you have not actually measured.

Migration decision

Choose a cutover date, retain your old exports and reconcile a full reporting period. Check how historical records and receipts are retained after cancellation. Avoid running two authoritative ledgers unless you have a defined reconciliation process.
